The Limits of Our Imperfection

Setting: My own

Original short fiction (challenge)

Standard disclaimer: This is intended as a work of fiction. It may contain adult themes or upsetting material.

When I ran short of inspiration but wanted to get back into the swing of short blog fiction, I decided to use the same prompt set as for Neptune’s Rain Cuts Like Diamonds where you randomly roll a title, first line and last line from a list.

9 – The Limits of Our Imperfection (Title)

7 – The odd man remained silent, forcing a small, copper box into my hands. (First line – though I thought it was ‘old man’, so that’s where I ended up)

9 – The smoke was blue and grey and smelled like a promise. (Last line)

Struck By Lightning

Setting: Changeling: The Lost

Original fanfiction

Standard disclaimer: This is intended as a work of fanfiction. It may contain adult themes or upsetting material. I do not claim to own Changeling: The Lost or any of Onyx Path/White Wolf’s intellectual property.

This fanfic was inspired when I was reading Ray Bradbury’s Something Wicked This Way Comes – in the opening, a seller of lightning rods provides one of the characters with a weird, misshapen lightning rod that has lots of angles and occult symbols on it. I suddenly wanted to write a Changeling: The Lost love story about a self-effacing lightning rod who longed to dance because he had fallen in love with the lightning itself. I would personally recommend listening to Night and Day as performed by Fred Astaire as you read, but I won’t hold it against you if you don’t! Continue reading “Struck By Lightning”

The Hanging Tree

Setting: My own

Original flash fiction (challenge)

Standard disclaimer: This is intended as a work of fiction. It may contain adult themes or upsetting material.

This is a flash fiction challenge from Chuck Wendig’s blog, Terrible Minds (NSFW), in which the prompt was ‘write about a tree’. It was meant to be limited at 1000 words but…uh…I’m bad at conveying a whole narrative in 1k. Working on that. Also, turns out grim fairy tale/fantasy is kind of a thing I enjoy writing, who’d have thought it?

See here for the original post.

Fans of the Hunger Games films will detect some influence from a certain song. Entirely intentional, ‘The Hanging Tree’ was definitely going round in my head while I wrote this.

Fight of the Century

Setting: My own

Original flash fiction (challenge)

Standard disclaimer: This is intended as a work of fiction. It may contain adult themes or upsetting material.

This is a flash fiction challenge from Chuck Wendig’s blog, Terrible Minds (NSFW), in which the prompt was ‘Good vs. Evil’. I didn’t post a link on that page because I got nervous and bottled out, partly as well because I don’t know anything about wrestling, but I couldn’t get this epic match out of my head.

Neptune’s Rain Cuts Like Diamonds

Setting: My own

Original flash fiction (challenge)

Standard disclaimer: This is intended as a work of fiction. It may contain adult themes or upsetting material. Particular content warning for severed heads. It is not intended to provide any commentary or reference to the current floods, hurricanes and other extreme weather conditions across the world, that’s just how the timings worked out!

This is a flash fiction challenge from Chuck Wendig’s blog, Terrible Minds (NSFW), in which the challenge was to take a title, first line and last line from a list and write a story about them. I randomly rolled mine with three d10:

5 – Neptune’s Rain Cuts Like Diamonds (Title)

8 – The bodies were bobbing on the sea, and a raft drifted behind. (First line)

7 – She plucked a hair from the severed head, and threaded her needle. (Last line)

All the Lights

Setting: Changeling: The Lost

Original fanfiction

Standard disclaimer: This is intended as a work of fanfiction. It may contain adult themes or upsetting material. I do not claim to own Changeling: The Lost or any of Onyx Path/White Wolf’s intellectual property.

I don’t often show people fiction about my own characters, but walking around Norwich, seeing all the Christmas lights, made me think how much Creep, one of my past Changeling: the Lost characters would have liked the idea of people filling the city with lights during the darkest season. She still remains one of my favourite characters and the first game character I made who I felt was as layered and vulnerable as the characters I wrote about in my fiction, so I guess this is sort of a celebration of her, and of lights in the darkness. The Last Bar on the Left

Setting: Changeling: The Lost

Original fanfiction

Standard disclaimer: This is intended as a work of fanfiction. It may contain adult themes or upsetting material. I do not claim to own Changeling: The Lost or any of Onyx Path/White Wolf’s intellectual property.

I originally wrote this story for submission to White Wolf’s sadly short-lived fiction magazine. On reflection, I’m rather glad the magazine closed the month I submitted ‘The Last Bar on the Left’: it was rambling and had no driving narrative, and was full of condescending attempts to mimic the speech patterns of an American small-town bar owner. So I rewrote it with a different spin and a more hopeful ending.
